Nonprofit leaders are often told to "do more with less." Kevin believes that mindset is not only limiting—it's outdated. In an era of increased scrutiny, competition for funding, and rising community need, sustainability requires strategy, clarity, and confidence. Nonprofits are not just causes; they are institutions. And institutions must be built to last.
Kevin is the author of Winning the Nonprofit Game: Funding, Strategy & Leadership for Sustainable Impact (coming soon). Drawing on decades of experience in nonprofit leadership, law, and public health, the book distills the essential strategies every organization must master—from securing competitive grants and becoming a preferred government contractor to building durable relationships with funders, regulators, and capital partners. It is a practical, no-nonsense playbook for leaders committed to long-term impact, not just short-term survival.
Kevin serves as an Associate Professor in the Public Health Program at Touro University California and is a former Director and Lecturer at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. His leadership experience includes serving as Executive Director of Berkeley Youth Alternatives and Policy Director for the California Pan-Ethnic Health Network. He also served as Board Chair of LifeLong Medical Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center headquartered in Berkeley, California, which serves more than 65,000 patients annually.
Kevin is a licensed attorney and the President & CEO of Stephen Capital Partners, LLC, a firm dedicated to expanding access to capital for nonprofits, churches, small businesses, credit unions, and health organizations nationwide. Through his legal and advisory practice, he supports institutions navigating governance, compliance, financing, and sustainable growth.
Nonprofit Compass™ was created to translate that experience into a practical, accessible tool—helping leaders assess risk, strengthen governance, and make informed decisions with confidence.
Because in the nonprofit universe, you're not just chasing dollars—you're building legacies.

Why I Built Nonprofit Compass™
I built Nonprofit Compass™ because I've seen too many nonprofit leaders set up to fail—not because they lack passion, but because they lack clear, actionable guidance at the moment decisions are made. Executive Directors and board members are expected to master governance, compliance, funding, finance, and risk management—often with limited staff, limited time, and constantly shifting rules.
Over the years, I've worked alongside leaders navigating audits, IRS filings, board dysfunction, restricted grants, state compliance, cash-flow crises, and the pressure to deliver outcomes while "doing more with less." I've also seen what happens when an organization builds strong systems early: it becomes fundable, durable, and trusted.
Nonprofit Compass™ exists to give leaders a practical starting point—an organized, plain-language way to identify risk, ask better questions, and strengthen the institution behind the mission. My goal is simple: help you move from reactive leadership to strategic leadership, and from uncertainty to confident execution—so your organization can deliver services today and sustain impact for years to come.
