How to Prepare a Clear Board Compliance Update
Prepare a clear nonprofit board update with compliance priorities, upcoming deadlines, assigned owners, and decisions that need attention.
What does the board need to know?
A useful compliance update explains what needs attention, who is responsible, and which decisions require board involvement. Start with a short overview rather than a long list of completed tasks.
Group your update into completed work, upcoming obligations, and unresolved issues. If an obligation is uncertain, say so and identify the person who will confirm the requirement. A clear limitation is more useful than an unsupported assurance.
How can you make priorities easy to review?
For each priority, record the current status, responsible person, next action, and target date. Separate internal planning dates from confirmed filing deadlines. Explain the consequence of a delay without overstating legal or financial risk.
Highlight items that require a decision, such as approving a policy or allocating resources for a professional review. Include the specific decision requested and enough context for board members to prepare.
What should happen after the meeting?
Record agreed actions and update responsibility assignments after the meeting. Keep supporting documents in your organization's approved storage system, with access limited to the people who need them.
Nonprofit Compass™ can help you review checklist progress and the organization risk score before drafting your update. Paid plans include PDF compliance reports. A checklist or report supports oversight; it does not certify compliance or replace an attorney, CPA, or auditor.
